Shoot One

Zoom Bursts : I went outside and did an experiment with zoom bursts. I wasn't very successful because I couldn't find the correct settings at the time, also I didn't have a very steady hand. By zooming out after focusing it creates a blurred look at the outside of the centre of attention.

Double Exposure : I went out and found an interesting background, the graffiti that is in college. I then took a head shot of Hayley to add to this picture. In photoshop I made the picture of Hayley transparent and added it to the picture of the graffiti. Personally I'm not very proud of this image because there were other things in the background of the photograph of Hayley. I wouldn't use this as a final image because I have a lot more tho think about.

Joiners : I had a picture of Big Ben and some of the landscape in London. I opened it in photoshop to be able to change the photograph as much as I can. I used the rectangle tool and held onto shift and used it multiple times to get a joiner affect, I then moved the sections I selected slightly to make it look off kilter. From the sections I moved I also darkened   slightly to add more of an affect.

Projections : I went into the studio and had a white background to start with, I also had a model with a grey dress on, the lightest dress she had. I had a laptop and projector set up on a table just in front of my camera and tripod. I made sure all my settings were correct experimenting to get the correct exposure. I then projected an image I had previously taken, I think this gave a really nice effect, although the background was slightly wrinkled and the image is slightly pixilated.

Emulsion Transfers : To do this I had to have a printed photograph, some paper and acrylic paint. What I had to do was paint onto the paper woth the acrylic paunt and also paint the photo (on the side with the photo on). Then I placed the painted side of the photograph onto the painted paper and smoothed it down as much as possible. After that I used a hair dryer to fully dry it, then wetting the back of the photograph I was able to peal the ack of the photo off and see that it was transfered onto the paper. I like this style because it looks like a really old photo and you are able to deteriate it as much as you want to, to give it a different look.

Light Painting : While in the studio I made sure it was completely dark and that I had a black background. I put my camera on a tripod to keep it steady and set the shutter speed to 'BULB' this meant I could hold down the capture button for as long as I wanted. Setting the ISO to about 1000 and the apature about 3.2 to try and get a good affect. I used a tourch and had my name written backwards. I personally really like light painting and the effect it gives, although this photograph I've taken isn't brilliant but I know what I can do to improve it. Also I have more ideas to make it more interesting.

Shoot Plan

Scanograms would be an interesting idea for my final work, I will use my personal belongings that are in my bag and an item of clothing (my scarf). I'm might try to move something while i'm doing the scanning . I will be needing a flat bed canner and the items I'm scanning. The shoot will take place in the classroom where we will have a scanner we can use. When using the scanner you have to make sure nothing wet goes on the bed of the scanner, also you have to make sure that if you're doing any scanning of your face it's best to keep your eyes closed because the light emitted from the scanner can cause a lot of damage to your eyes or even blind you. As well the scanner has a glass surface which is easily scratched or could break if too much weight is placed on it, another thing is if choosing to move anything while scanning can leave dust particles which can create a bad look for the final image.

Emulsion Transfers is a different way to get an abstract look to a photograph, I will be using a photograph from home that has a lot of detail to it I will then need acrylic paint which I will paint onto the photograph and I will also paint some paper. After this I will have to stick the picture down, paint to paint, and smooth it down as much as possible. I need a hair dryer to dry the picture and when I wet it to get rid of the back of the photograph it will be 'printed' with an accent look to it. The shoot for this image will take place in an art room where we can do the painting. I have to consider how much paint I use, too much and too little will ruin the final image. Also this technique doesn't work every time, with a lot of difficulties in getting the back of the photograph without ruining the image.

Projection Photography is a very good way to get a lot of colour or a specific style into a photograph which is a good thing to use towards my final idea. I will use on of my own images to project and make it more personal to me, I will also use a model to stand in front of the background. I will need a white backdrop and someone dressed in white to get a good affect. This shoot will have to take place in the studio because I will be able to control a lot more aspects of the photograph. Some technical difficulties I have to consider are the quality of the image, if it's a bad quality when I enlarge it by projecting it, it will become grainy and pixilated, also if the model or object I use in front of the backdrop isn't wearing a light colour then the projection won't stand out. Possible difficulties is making sure as little shadow is visible on the backdrop from the model.

Zoom Bursts are an interesting way to get a different look to an image. I will be using a flower or something vibrant and I will need my camera for this technique. This shoot can either take place outside or in the classroom / studio. I will need to make sure that the camera I use is fully

The majority of experimental photography is very abstract. Zoom bursts involves zooming in as far as you can on a subject

Emulsion Transfers

With emulsion transfers it's pretty simple, it involves a printed picture, some acrylic paint and some paper.
First you paint the paper wight the right amount to cover the photograph, then you paint picture side of the photograph as well. While the paint is still wet you have to stick the photograph paint down onto the part of the paper with paint on, you have to smith it down as much as possible to ensure it is stuck down. Then you need to dry the picture stuck to the paper until it is hard and dry. Then by wetting the back of the photograph you are able to peel / scrub the paper back of the photograph off, this will leave the photograph printed onto the paper.
I really like this style because you can control how distressed you want the picture to look by leaving some bits unpeeled.

Scanagrams

Scanography is like photography but a lot different at the same time, by putting something on the scanner the mechanisms in the machine give a really good detailed image that most of the time can't be produced with camera. Although a scanner has a small ability to create depth of field but it is possible to scan 3D objects with ease.


Having the scanner open means that the background is fully black with no imperfections.

Scanography can come out a lot more detailed than a picture taken on a DSLR camera depending on the quality of the scanner.
I really like the images where people have put all their personal belongings onto the scanner, it just makes the photograph a lot more personal, with all the detail put in.

Projections

Projections are a good way to get an abstract image, with a lot of colour. When doing these we need a clean white background so the image chosen to project is seen really well, also you need a high quality projector and a good quality picture so when it's blown up it doesn't go grain. When taking pictures using projections the room needs to be completely dark, also when having anyone in the frame they need to be as close to the backdrop as possible to create as little shadow as they can. To get the picture exposed correctly the ISO number has to be really high, 3200. It's really good because you can be so creative using as many different backgrounds as you want to get the look you want. I really like this look because you are able to get almost any style that you want and depending on the image quality it will be the best color coverage you can get.

My Work

These two images with the nature background are my photographs. When we went into the studio to experiment with this technique, we got some lines and imperfections from our background and the image I used but overall I really like these photographs.

Initial Research

For our experimental assignment we are required to plan, shoot and edit experimental photographs. We will be experimenting with Scanograms, Emulsion Transfers, Projection Photography, Double Exposures, Joiners, Abstract Images (Zoom Burst), Light Paintings and Multiplicity. All of these styles are very quirky and abstract, they are quite new and 'incorrect', people call the 'incorrect' because they don't follow the rules of photography; but this doesn't mean that
. It's good to try them out and find a style that we enjoy, some people may not find them good or nice but some people will enjoy these pictures and want to study or research them like we're doing.
